I barely recognize myself. This deep, endless need to make her feel comfortable. To make her feel like I see her and hear her. Like she’s worth knowing. Nobody’s ever made me feel this way before, and it’s crazy that I only realize that now. I wish I could make her understand.

With every minute I spend with her, I give less and less of a shit if this is a spell or not.

“You don’t have to act like I’m going to bite you.”

Eden smiles a little, giving me a flicker of hope.

“Sorry if I’m still a little, um, doubtful.” She picks up her glass of iced tea and takes a sip. “You spend enough of your life being treated like shit by certain people, and it’s not easy to believe when one of them wants to be nice.”

“Yes, but you have to feel I mean it.” I lower my brow, glancing around to make sure we’re not overheard. The restaurant is busy, so the overlapping voices drown out our conversation. A bunch of humans too wrapped up in themselves to notice anything else. “Inside. That other part of you.”

“Of course, I feel it, but so do you.” Her lips pull together in a thin line. “And it didn’t matter at the party, did it? You still rejected me.” There’s so much bitterness in her quiet voice. I can barely stand the way her eyes bore into my skull, like she can see what’s going on inside. Like she sees the real me and is repulsed.

“I did. I didn’t see a choice.” Not then, at least. When she rolls her eyes, I can only shrug. “Don’t act like you don’t know how it is. My dad, I mean. You don’t go against him, especially not in front of half the pack.”

I lean in, lowering my voice. “And if I had, you would’ve been blamed for it. You and Luna. Think about that for a second.”

I can tell she does when the lines between her eyebrows smooth out. She sits back in her chair with a small sigh. “They still blamed me and my friend who had absolutely nothing to do with any of this. Wait, you didn’t go after her, did you?”

“No, I’m busy chasing down someone else. Plus, I don’t believe this is a spell anymore.”

“Anymore?”

“I guess I did at first…” I sigh, not wanting to go backward. “Can we move past that now?”

“Past it? No.”

“How about just for tonight? We’re here. Nowhere near the pack. And the burgers smell fucking incredible.” I’m about ready to take one off somebody else’s table, they smell so good.

“It does smell amazing,” she admits with a tiny smile. “I’m, um, not used to going into a restaurant and ordering whatever I want.”

No kidding. She doesn’t know how many things I understand now. “Get used to it. You won’t have to live like that anymore.”

“You seem pretty sure of yourself.”

“I am. I’m always sure of myself.”

Her eyes meet mine and hold me in place. “Not always.
